(Disguised) Self Portrait

April 15, 2005

One of my undergraduate drawing classes culminated in a final project where we were asked to draw a disguised self portrait. I responded to the assignment by drawing myself with long hair and striking a “serious” glamour pose—a physical attribute and a physical act that embodied a sort of mainstream feminine charm that was definitely not a part of my personality. Yet, this very same “glamourous” gesture casts a shadow over my face exactly where a beard would grow in if I were a man—a tongue in cheek attack on my own on-again, off-again desire to cultivate socially mandated markers of feminine beauty.
