A Demonstration

April 15, 2007

This linoleum cut depicts an acrobatic female figure balancing on one finger, while maintaining a seemingly peaceful, yogic expression. The clear division between the upper and lower portions of the composition make it appear as though the figure has launched herself into the foreground with a force immense enough to redirect the atmosphere around her. I took advantage of the natural, directional quality of carving as a way of mark-making to define not only the figure’s forward motion, but also to emphasize the other-worldly quality of the figure’s action by composing the space in the lower portion of the composition with an unrealistic number of planes.
